Mighty Miuccia

February 4th, 2010 Daria No comments

I always admired this beautiful and clever woman with a degree in Political Sciences who had managed to turn her grandfather’s little business into a huge multi-million corporation. This woman is Miuccia Prada.

She is clever enough to separate politics from fashion and clever enough to combine them when needed. She is a sort of woman who can rule the world not directly but in her own wise way.

Miuccia once said:

“Fashion is an important part of a woman’s life. It’s a question of aesthetics and that is in no way stupid or superficial.”

This is the point. About women, fashion and how they do communicate. Fashion is clever, that’s why women reflect to it.

Fashion as foie gras or total glamour?

December 1st, 2009 Daria 1 comment

I’m not a big fan of glamour theme since it had acquired bad reputation. Of course as long as I can I’d stay within the group of people who do understand that glamour is about chic, beauty, style and fabulous feelings that you get when you come in to Prada or Dior boutiques. Unfortanutely it seems to be impossible as far as even fashion magazines start to make fun of the whole luxury and in the end glamour which is an obvious part of luxury industry.

Blaming myself for what I’m gonna tell write now but I do love these photos of Sasha Pivovarova for the italian magazine “Donna che amano” wearing outfits made of shopping bags.. Dior, Prada.. Hah, it’s quite outrageous linking to modern art and concepts of fashion being more urban, more borderless.

Still, I can’t take off the idea of fashion becoming a foie gras. What do I mean by saying such a thing is that producers of foie gras still do think they’re making an exclusive product while consumers do not even see any speciality in it, so retailers at some point start to lower the prices (of course there’re some types of foie gras that have always been very expensive and they still are) and more people can afford it. In the end you do get non-exclusive product, actually you get mass-product but at higher price than just liver in a supermarket.

A long thought, but that’s how I do think right now. At last, fashion was never about simplicity.

Undone PRADA

September 26th, 2009 Daria 3 comments

Prada Spring-Summer 2010 collection doesn’t need many words to describe. The first moment you will decide whether the clothes for you or not for you. Of course, plastic shoes with crystalls and plastic bags that are in fashion for at least the last three summers, will be regarded as the absolute must-haves not by everyone.

More interesting is how many girls will be willing to appear publicly in “undone” Prada costumes and dresses. Can you imagine those judging looks telling “what a disaster!” or “honey, you forgot to change at your fitting”? The clothes really look like it is unfinished yet, but by those scissored raw edges you undersatnd a total look.

Tops sewed with crystalls will appear in plenty of wardrobes and will be one of the exclusive outfits to wear.

I questioned myself how long could I wait till something on the runway that would take my breath away? Here it is – made of chandellier parts and crystalls dresses by Prada. And this is when I don’t care how confortable it will be to take a sit in them, I can’t stand the whole evening long! It’s definately worth it.

Miuccia’s fashion was never about borders, it has always been about crossing them.

When all designers try to save us fron cold she makes us lace dresses, when everybody thinks about comfortable shoes Miuccia puts high heeled shoes with silk socks on her models. So if you wear Prada you’re always fashionable, but that doesn’t mean that evry passing stranger will understand it.

Shoes: turn your fantasy on!

September 9th, 2009 Daria 1 comment

“New season is all about shoes!” – that’s what my friend said the other day. Designers show us such a variety that even sophisticated shoe-lover will be satisfied. Forms and materials break all the rules – from simple high heel to complicated hells easily compared to art objects you can see in MoMA, from leather and suede to polymers and textiles. The only thing you need is to turn your fantasy on and your legs will be in the center of any party.

Rain is the worst that can happen to you in autumn. What can you do if you are wearing sandals? To avoid water in your shoes choose platform shoes.  There are hundreds of platform shoes and boots this season. You can find such at Chanel, Fendi, Prada, Dior, Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Givenchy, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, and this is just little part of the list. Platform can be heavy or tiny and sophisticated.

Boots, shoes, ankle boots on a platform can be easily found in any designer collection this year.”Holland shoes” by Dolce&Gabbana and BCBG Max Azria, Burberry offers heavy platform, while Charles Anastase, Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci and Antonio Berardi their feminine variations.

Wedge-heeled shoes is the alternative to heavy platform shoes. Those shoes you can find at Chloe, Lacroix or  Chanel. You’ll look fashionable and modest.

Thigh-high boots is the absolute must-have this season. You can choose skinny ones as at Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, Roberto Cavalli or shapeless as at  Chloe, Hermes, Costume National or Loewe. Karl Lagerfeld in his Fendi collection tricks fashion – instead of boots he has created shoes with a “stocking” to put on.

You can also choose simple heavy boots as in  Ann Demeulemeester, Hermes, Prada, Kenzo collections.

Ankle-boots will be fashionable as usual – suede platform boots, high-heel python boots, leather boots. You can pick any kind you like.

Some summer tendencies stay in our wardrobes even till winter. Shoes with many crossed lines as in collections by Derek Lam or Bottega Veneta. Shoes, sandals, boots. The alternative is lace. More laces is better. To add sme luxury xhoose shoes with diamonds ( Chloe, Blumarine), metallic elements or thorns (Givenchy).

Finally, “animal origins“.  Leopard colouring (Blumarine, Donna Karan, Dolce&Gabbana), python shoes (Dries van Noten), shoes decorated with fur (Miu Miu) and made in fur (Calvin Klein, Fendi).

Those shoes really can’t be day-to-day shoes, but they are amazing. Don’t forget to turn your fantasy on!
