The one to hate fashion is the one without any sense of it

January 25th, 2010 Daria No comments

Today early morning I ran into an article “Why do I hate fashion” by Tanya Gold in Guardian. To clear everything up from the beginning – this woman is one to hate fashion, I’m not. I love fashion and I can separate commercials and business from art which is obviously a huge part of fashion that makes it incredible all in all.

Going through her memories and different situations Tanya Gold makes just awfully unlogical conclusions, so narrow-minded. First of all she points out that there were one 16-year old woman who had fallen between two carriages in West Sussex because of her high-heeled shoes. Point taken – high-heeled shoes are bad. Are they? What about the statement that the night was icy? What about this girl could fall wearing flats as well? What about if one has to die there is no way to blame the SHOE? I suppose grownup person has to have some logic. How much did this 16-year old girl pay for her shoes? – Tanya Gold asks. Come on, some hundred pounds, but not her life, definately. One falls between the carriages not because of the shoes but because of ones fate and circumstances working on it all together.

Morgan, J stiletto heels

The other thing is that Tanya Gold probably was never, ever fashionable enough to realize the real value of fashion. Once changing her look for better she started to enjoy, but later than her look has changed for worse she started to laugh at runway shows because she can’t wear anything from the runway. I can be too snobby here, but why does famous designer has to care about you being fat, while making his collection of inspirational looks? Do you want to wear it? Than get thin. If you can’t than just don’t blame fashion for that.

A big part of my text is written under the emotion being terrified by people who just don’t get the world of fashion, who never contributes to it – their blaming articles don’t count, but it still has some point, at least to those who love fashion as much as I do. How someone can say that high-heeled shoes are bad? I’m wearing them the whole time and I’m comfortable in them, and many women are. Of course not every woman has the right feet for the shoe, but at the same time that’s also her problem because such as Sergio Rossi does shoes for all types of legs, they’re universal in a way.

To blame shoes and fashion for one’s death or weight or whatever one has to be a total psycho. I’m not saying that Tanya is, but I’m certain that she is not a person from a fashion pool, than why she hast to blame it. She reminds me of those american girls who eat lots of sandwiches during the day and in the evening cry over Vogue that there is nothing for them in there. Maybe it’s not Vogue, may be it’s you, who has to be blamed for being out of fashion standards?

The one to hate fashion is the one without any sense of it and the one non-existent for me. Sorry, Tanya. I still will be reading Guadian, but not your column.

You can understand fashion or not, but you can’t blame fashion for you being oversized! At the beginning of The September Issue Anna Wintour (one highly appreciated women in fashion world, I hope you know that, Mrs. Gold) says that some people mock fashion because they’re intimidated by it. Anna Wintour is absolutely right in that. For one more reason I do respect the woman who makes one of the greatest magazines about fashion in the world, which Tanya Gold unfortunately torns into pieces.

Love is shocking

December 17th, 2009 Daria No comments

When Katie Grand started to make the new magazine with a sensed name LOVE under patronage of Conde Nast everybody has already known that this magazine is going to be provocative, fresh new and very stylish. As the first issue of LOVE with naked Beth Ditto on the cover popped out almost everyone was shocked. Being a perfect stylist and trendhunter, I would say, Katie Grand knew exactly what public needs – some disproportional person on the cover to catch their eye. By disproportional I only mean Beth’s outstanding personality and her screaming music, that obviously not everyone will love to listen. But as we speak about LOVE’s love – Beth is one of the top beloved.

When the second issue covered with 13 years old blogger Tavi has appeared in the stores it was impressive, it was fashionable according to the last time attention to Tavi, but it was a bit weird to see on Katie’s cover someone who has already appeared on Dasha Zhukova’s POP magazine cover, the exact magazine Katie was editing before LOVE.

At some point it semed that Katie was just joking trying to make her first two issues as imressive as she could, but when the third issue with naked Lara Stone on the cover has appeared there were no doubt left that she wasn’t joking, she wasn’t even a bit of joking. She was that damn serious to shake the whole industry. She actually did.

LOVE is one of the most prominent magazines that Conde Nast publishes, oh, not just Conde Nast. It is one of the most prominent magazines in general. Speaking of creativity, I suppose that Grand will never rich that point when she can actually stop.

While she’s not stopping, I’m enjoying the whole beauty of LOVE.

The editor is naked!

December 15th, 2009 Daria No comments

Some years ago it was a highly discussed issue when Carine Roitfeld the editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris has made some photos for Purple magazine topless with a silk scarf covering her breast. There was nothing really provocative in those photos, sexy Carine, that’s it!

Now it’s turn of the russian Vogue editor-in-chief Aliona Doletskaya to take her clothes off. She’s been photographed for russian version of Black Square magazine. The first cover is Aliona with nothing left but jewellery and the second cover is a 13 years old model who reminds a bit of Tavi with a weird hat and ridiculous eyeglasses. Nice couple! Who has even decided to put them together?!

Aside form the “Tavi” issue, Doletskaya photos are fabulous although at some point you can’t really imagine her naked on the cover of a magazine.

The photos were made during Paris fashion week and they show Doletskaya in clothes and accessories of the most popular brands.

How they did forget Versace

Gianni celebrated their success and congratulated them.

But now they have forgot him.

Such observations become a big dissapontment. When you realize that even beautiful world of fashion can be disrespectdul to those who made a lot to the world of fashion, you’re afraid of what is going on to fashion.

I still do believe that there are people who do really love fashion and who will never forget genius of Gianni Versace.

Her Lagerfeld’s Majesty Lara

December 2nd, 2009 Daria No comments

Karl Lagerfeld always chooses the models himself. His models are never chosen by their popularity, they’re chosen by charm that only Karl can see. Of course Karl’s models always become famous afterall and what else can you expect? Karl has never made the wrong choice.

larastoneroomservice

Some days ago I wondered whether Lara Stone can be as popular as for example Lagerfeld’s beloved Claudia while Claudia is still in fashion. I stand on my point that sha can’t but it’s quite  obvious that Karl makes everything he can to make Lara the real star. Karl’s shootings with her are amazing. Look at the shooting for Numero magazine.

Actually it works out she is not only Karl’s model anymore, she’s also the new face for Louis Vuitton Spring-Summer  2010 AD campaign.

Fashion as foie gras or total glamour?

December 1st, 2009 Daria 1 comment

I’m not a big fan of glamour theme since it had acquired bad reputation. Of course as long as I can I’d stay within the group of people who do understand that glamour is about chic, beauty, style and fabulous feelings that you get when you come in to Prada or Dior boutiques. Unfortanutely it seems to be impossible as far as even fashion magazines start to make fun of the whole luxury and in the end glamour which is an obvious part of luxury industry.

24mrxi9

Blaming myself for what I’m gonna tell write now but I do love these photos of Sasha Pivovarova for the italian magazine “Donna che amano” wearing outfits made of shopping bags.. Dior, Prada.. Hah, it’s quite outrageous linking to modern art and concepts of fashion being more urban, more borderless.

j75jkz

Still, I can’t take off the idea of fashion becoming a foie gras. What do I mean by saying such a thing is that producers of foie gras still do think they’re making an exclusive product while consumers do not even see any speciality in it, so retailers at some point start to lower the prices (of course there’re some types of foie gras that have always been very expensive and they still are) and more people can afford it. In the end you do get non-exclusive product, actually you get mass-product but at higher price than just liver in a supermarket.

A long thought, but that’s how I do think right now. At last, fashion was never about simplicity.

Lily Coco

November 28th, 2009 Daria No comments

Lily Allen is a perfect match to Chanel brand. Karl Lagerfeld certainly has an eye for perfect models make Chanel campaigns.

Lily is sooo Chanel. Sha reminds of young Coco with all her unostentatious sexuality and strong character.

Staying boy-some rude and feminine-some graceful she conquered men, as Lily with all same qualities conqueres our attention.

Alice: how we stop to wonder

November 24th, 2009 Daria No comments

Alice in Wonderland is one of the top fairy-tales themes often used by fashion photographers. This time I ran into Frauke Fischer “Alice im Wunder-Land” shoot for Diva magazine.

Frauke Fischer for DIVA 01

Frauke Fischer for DIVA 02

It’s bright and vivid but honestly it seems that photographer doesn’t realize the whole idea replacing magic miracles with huge trains and that’s it.

Frauke Fischer for DIVA 03

Maybe I sound a bit sceptical, but anyone who saw Annie Leibovitz shoot “Alice in Wonderland” for Vogue in 2003 will totally agree with me. No offence to Ida and she’s obviously not blamed for anything, but Natalia Vodianova in Alice shoot looks more like Alice than Ida does.

84934_NV_VogueUS_1202_04_AnnieLeibo

84929_NV_VogueUS_1202_03_AnnieLeibo

The fact of famous designers playing other Lewis Caroll characters (Karl Lagerfeld, Viktor&Rolf, Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, Olivier Theyskens, Marc Jacobs, Christian Lacroix, Donatella Versace, Nicolas Ghesquiere, Helmut Lang, Stephen Jones, Tom Ford) in Leibovitz shoot makes some benefit although the main point is to create an atmosphere which Leibovitz is unarguable master making of (refering to Louis Vuitton AD camapign, etc.).

The Wonderland atmosphere is so special for millions of girls who are already grown-ups and read fashion magazines that photographers and editors often take it to their editorials, but obviously as we become grown-ups most of us don’t catch the idea of magic anymore and Wonderland creation is possible for most creative of us.

W is an art letter

November 18th, 2009 Daria No comments

One of my favorite magazines about fashion , art, photography and modern world of beautiful things is W. Why is that? First of all there are not so many magazines that can show us good photos made by the most brilliant photographers of our time together with professionally texts full of not only interesting information but that have their sense of a writing style. Second, whoever will say that it’s not true will be a real full, W magazine does influence modern trends and tendencies not only in fashion, but in art as well.

phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg

As I’m speaking about art in terms of W magazine, you can probably guess that the biggest  issue not only for me but for many people reading W is W Art Issue which is a big deal. Every time the Art Issue stands for something and something always has to be an oustanding.

So, the new W Art Issue is not an exclusion. The idea developed by Maurizio Cattelan shows our reality from religious and public sides. The emotional part of photos turns any conduct to a rational sense away. It’s not only because of amazing Linda Evangelista, but because of serious theme put in unusual context.

Digital GaGa

October 24th, 2009 Daria No comments

I just came across with new fashionable video with Lady GaGa for DazedDigital.

Снимок экрана 6

Снимок экрана 5

Снимок экрана 7

Usually such kind of project are being too short become kind of very expensive pr or something, while in this case it’s totally different. Mainly because DazedDigital has chosen already famous star who doesn’t need additional popularity, she’s got lots of fans worldwide not only because of her music which is fresh (specially considering her live concerts), but also because of her unrepeatable style. She is stylish.

Снимок экрана 9

Снимок экрана 13

The other reason of this project being more art than an ad is that you can see a high quality work of stylists, fashion consultants, director and photographers. While we can argue whether GaGa is a freek or stylish popular girl, we’d better watch beautiful video to find it out.

Conde Nast closes 4 magazines

October 7th, 2009 Daria No comments

One of biggest worldwide publiching houses Conde Nast closes 4 of its magazines. Some critics tell that this is only the beginning of huge slow down in publishing business. The reason for such firm actions is economic crisis, which caused constant reduction of magazines’ circulation and huge drop in income from advertising sector.

liv-tyler-cookie-magazine elegant_bride_cover_2

Unfortunately, but one of the oldest food magazines Gourmet comes into fourth. many people don’t stop writing to Conde Nast main office to save the magazine. may be it will work out. But another 3 will be closed without any doubt – Cookie, Elegant Bride amd Modern Bride.

xangoARTICLEgourmetCOVER500w modern-bride1

Whatever readers would say it won’t cause any action. Really for any publishing house is better to open the magazine once again when they have money for it when constantly suffer losses. Nor the will to save magazines, nor unemployed people (counting to 180) will stop the process. from any point of view publishing business has to be profitable. In other case they stop to publish.
